Computational humanities @DHd 2018

The computational humanities group contributes to the DHd 2018 with a long paper, a poster and a panel.

DHd 2018 in Cologne: “Kritik der digitalen Vernunft”

From Feb 26 to Mar 2, the 5th DHd conference was hosted in Cologne. The Kant-inspired conference theme “Kritik der digitalen Vernunft” was used as a leitmotif in many of the talks, posters and panels, which critically reflected about the scholarly consequences and epistemological implications of digital tools and methods in the humanities.

In cooperation with colleagues from other institutions, the computational humanities group contributed to the DHd 2018 with a long paper, a poster presentation and a panel.

Long paper: Sentiment analysis in Lessings plays

Thomas Schmidt, Manuel Burghardt, Katrin Dennerlein

“Kann man denn auch nicht lachend sehr ernsthaft sein?” – Zum Einsatz von Sentiment Analyse-Verfahren für die quantitative Untersuchung von Lessings Dramen

We presented an evaluation study of different sentiment analysis dictionaries combined with NLP methods for Lessings plays. We also implemented a web tool for the computer-based analysis of drama texts and their underlying sentiment.

Poster: Digital Dylan

Colin Sippl, Florian Fuchs, Manuel Burghardt

All these people who say whatever it is I’m supposed to be doing – that’s all gonna pass, because, obviously, I’m not gonna be around forever. That day’s gonna come when there aren’t gonna be any more records, and then people won’t be able to say ‘Well, this one’s not as good as the last one.’ They’re gonna have to look at it all. And I don’t know what the picture will be, what people’s judgement will be at that time. I can’t help you in that area. – Bob Dylan (Jonathan Cott: Bob Dylan, the essential interviews, 2006, p. 337.)

In this poster we presented a distant reading approach to Bob Dylans lyrics from 1962-2016. We used the Open American National Corpus as a reference corpus and implemented several association measures for the analysis of Dylans lyrics.
